Training Programmes

4 Questions

What will I learn in Memory Training?

Training focuses on practical memory techniques and the skills required to use them effectively.

Depending on the programme, this may include techniques for remembering names and faces, numbers, words, information, sequences and other forms of information, along with methods for improving attention, association and recall.

How is Memory Training conducted?

Memory Training follows a structured approach involving learning, understanding, practice and application of memory techniques.

The specific structure, duration and schedule will depend on the training programme offered by IMSA.

No.

Memory Training is not simply about memorising more information. It focuses on understanding how memory works and how to use effective techniques to encode, organise, retain and recall information.

Do I have to practise outside the training sessions?

Yes, regular practice is important.

Learning a memory technique is only the beginning. Consistent practice helps you understand the technique, develop proficiency and apply it more effectively.

Training may include methods based on association, visualisation, imagination, organisation and other structured memory strategies.

Can memory techniques help me remember names and faces?

Specific techniques can be used to create meaningful associations between names, faces and other identifying information, making them easier to recall.

Whether you are a student, competitive-exam aspirant, working professional, homemaker, senior citizen, educator or simply someone who wants to improve your memory and learning skills, you can benefit from memory training.

The training approach may be adapted to suit the learner’s age, goals and requirements, making memory training relevant for different stages and purposes in life.

Is Memory Training suitable for children?

Yes.

Memory Training can help children develop skills such as attention, concentration, association, visualisation and memory, when taught in an age-appropriate manner.

Can adults join Memory Training?

Yes.

For senior citizens, Memory Training can be a valuable way to stay mentally active, support healthy brain ageing and potentially reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. While Memory Training is not a treatment or cure for Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, keeping the brain engaged through learning and mental activity can contribute to overall cognitive well-being.

Championship FAQ

Your questions about participating in memory championships, answered.

General Questions

5 Questions

What is a Memory Championship?

A Memory Championship is a competitive event in which participants test their ability to memorise and recall different types of information under defined conditions.

Participants compete in different memory disciplines, with performance evaluated according to the scoring system applicable to each discipline.

Who can participate in a Memory Championship?

Memory Sport is open to participants of all age groups. Participants are placed into age categories based on their age:

  • Kids: 12 years and under
  • Juniors: 13–17 years
  • Adults: 18–59 years
  • Seniors: 60 years and above

This makes Memory Sport a unique competition where people of different generations can learn, train and compete.

Do I need to be a student to participate?

No.

Memory Sport is not only for students. Adults, working professionals, homemakers and senior citizens can also participate.

Memory is a skill that can be trained and challenged at every stage of life.

Do I need previous Memory Sport experience to participate?

It depends on the championship.

Some Memory Championships are open to beginners and first-time participants, while others may have specific eligibility, qualification or previous-experience requirements.

Therefore, participants should always check the official announcement and participation requirements of the particular championship before registering.

If beginners are eligible, no previous Memory Sport experience is required. However, learning the appropriate memory techniques and practising before the competition can help you prepare and perform with greater confidence.

Do I need to complete memory training before participating?

Not necessarily.

Participants may enter a championship without completing an IMSA training programme. However, structured training can help you understand the disciplines, learn appropriate techniques and prepare for competitive conditions.

Discipline Questions

4 Questions

What disciplines are included in Memory Championships?

The disciplines used by IMSA championships may include:

  • Names & Faces
  • Numbers
  • Binary Numbers
  • Words
  • Images
  • Cards
  • Dates
  • Spoken Numbers

The exact disciplines included in a particular championship will be announced in its official competition information.

Do I have to participate in every discipline?

Not necessarily.

In most Memory Championships, participants may choose to compete in the disciplines they are interested in. However, the participation format may vary from one championship to another, so participants should always check the official championship announcement.

Participants must also follow the event’s entry and exit procedures. During the competition, participants may generally enter or leave the championship hall only during the designated breaks between disciplines or sessions.

However, there is an important distinction between participating in individual disciplines and competing for championship titles.

If you choose not to participate in all the disciplines, you can still compete in the disciplines you have selected and be eligible for the applicable discipline-level results, subject to the championship rules.

However, to be eligible to win either the Category Championship title or the Overall Championship title, you must participate in all the disciplines required for the championship. The scores from all the disciplines are combined to determine the respective championship winners.

In short: You can choose to participate in selected disciplines, but to compete for a Category Championship or Overall Championship title, you must participate in all the required disciplines.

Are the same disciplines used in every championship?

Not necessarily.

The disciplines, format, number of trials and other competition details may vary depending on the championship.

Participants should always refer to the official information for the specific championship they are entering.

What happens in a memory discipline?

A typical discipline involves a memorisation phase followed by a recall phase.

Participants are given information to memorise within the prescribed conditions. After the memorisation period, they reproduce the information according to the rules of that discipline.

The performance is then evaluated and scored.

Scoring & Results

4 Questions

How is performance scored?

Each discipline has its own scoring methodology, designed to evaluate the participant’s performance accurately and consistently.

Depending on the discipline, factors such as the amount of information memorised, accuracy, correct sequence, errors, speed and time may be taken into consideration.

The scoring system used across Memory Championships is generally consistent and follows the original scoring framework introduced in 1991, with modifications made only where necessary for the specific competition format.

For a complete understanding of how marks are awarded in each discipline, participants can refer to the official Scoring Guide, which provides detailed information about the scoring methodology.

The exact scoring provisions applicable to a particular championship will always be communicated in its official competition information.

How is the overall winner determined?

Where an overall championship ranking is conducted, participants’ scores from the applicable disciplines are combined according to the championship’s scoring system.

Participants may also receive individual discipline rankings and age-category rankings where applicable.

Can I win a prize even if I don't finish first overall?

Potentially, yes.

Championships may recognise performance through individual discipline results, age-category results and overall rankings, depending on the awards structure of the particular event.

The awards applicable to each championship will be announced officially.

What happens if two participants have the same score?

Tie-breaking procedures, where required, will be determined according to the official rules of the particular championship.

The applicable procedure will be communicated in the championship regulations.

Participants are expected to follow the instructions of competition officials at all times.

Who decides whether an answer is correct?

Answers are evaluated according to the rules and scoring methodology applicable to the particular discipline.

Competition officials are responsible for conducting and evaluating the competition according to the applicable procedures.
